Susan Sarandon for The Wall Street Journal on “living loans” for coffee farmers

Posted on February 13, 2013 by Cause Effect Agency

If you’re a Wall Street Journal subscriber, don’t miss Susan Sarandon’s Op-Ed piece highlighting fair trade coffee and Heifer International’s impact on the lives of small coffee farmers.

This is not Susan’s first exploration of how fair trade coffee producer Green Mountain Coffee Roasters and Heifer International are working together. In 2011, Cause Effect Agency invited Susan to narrate the film After the Harvest: Fighting Hunger in the Coffeelands, which addresses the period of hunger that coffee farmers face each year once cash from the harvest runs out, a problem so common it has its own name in Latin America: “los meses flacos,” the thin months.

Since 2008 Heifer International has partnered with Green Mountain Coffee Roasters to help small farmers support themselves during the off-season with alternative crops and livestock. Read the article on WSJ.com or visit Heifer International to learn more about how gifts of livestock and training can help these families thrive year-round.
